| Sample Itinerary :
Day 1: Depart from your school by coach
and travel to Dover for the short channel crossing to
France and on to your accommodation in the Greater Paris
area, arriving during the evening.
Day 2: Spend the whole day exploring
the splendid Palace of Versailles gaining unforgettable
insight into the opulent lifestyle of the French monarchs
that was the focus of the revolution. Begun in 1668
Louis XIV commenced this lavish project and created
the largest palace in Europe. The Palace housed over
20,000 people and the entire French court relocated
there in 1682, removing the monarch from the heart of
the capital. Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette were married
in 1770 in the newly completed Opéra built at the palace
and made Versailles their main residence in 1774. In
the extensive gardens you can visit the Petit Trianon
the favourite retreat of Marie Antoinette. On 6th October
1789 the Parisian mob invaded the palace in search of
Queen Marie-Antoinette. The royal family were removed
the next day to central Paris to await their fate at
the hands of Robespierre and his associates,
Day 3: There are many unexpected locations
within the city of Paris that bear witness to the events
of the French Revolution. St. Josephs-des-Carmes, the
Carmelite convent was used as a prison during the Revolution.
In 1792 more than 100 priests were massacred in the
courtyard as part of the September massacres and their
remains are now in the crypt. Another famous 'revolution'
prison was the Palais du Luxembourg where the painter
David was imprisoned in 1794. The Conciergerie housed
over 4,000 prisoners during the revolution, including
Marie-Antoinette, Charlotte Corday, Danton and Robespierre.
First used in 1792 the guillotine (or Louisette as it
was known) can be seen in the Cour du Commerce St. André
in St-Germain-des-Prés. The Musée Carnavalet contains
galleries devoted to both the reign of Louis XVI and
the Revolution, including a portrait of Danton and many
items of 'revolutionary' memorabilia. The Hôtel de Lamoignon
also contains documents relating to the history of the
revolution. You may wish to visit the royal tombs at
St. Denis where there is a memorial to Louis XVI and
Marie Antoinette or the Musée Nissim de Camondo that
faithfully recreates an aristocratic townhouse from
the reign of Louis XVI. Day 4: Depart
in the morning for the return journey, take an evening
channel crossing and continue on to your school. |
| Excursions : Our first
suggested visit is to the Chateau
at Versailles, home to the French court at the time
of the Revolution. Our suggestions for Day 3 include
Marie Antoinette's prison, the Conciergerie
and the Basilica
at St Denis where the tombs of the kings of France
are found.
